The adoption of low-code and no-code software in manufacturing has accelerated in recent years, allowing domain experts—rather than IT specialists—to develop applications that optimize production processes and simplify complex procedures for new workers.

This expansion of low-code software beyond traditional IT environments marks a significant shift in how industries approach digital transformation. Ray Kok, CEO of Mendix (Siemens’ low-code software division), emphasized this evolution:

“We've extended the reach of Mendix so that it goes beyond enterprise IT. If you look at our heritage, Mendix started in enterprise IT to bridge the gap between business and IT. Given the ongoing IT/OT (operations technology) convergence, we saw an opportunity to enable applications that run directly on the shop floor. Now, manufacturers can develop and deploy apps right at the production line or wherever they are needed.”


Low-Code Becomes a Strategic Enterprise Tool
Since Mendix first explored this shift, research has confirmed that low-code platforms are playing a critical role in manufacturing’s digital transformation. The company’s latest report, The Low-Code Perspective: Insights from Enterprise IT Leaders, highlights key trends based on input from 2,000 technology executives and senior IT decision-makers across Benelux, Germany, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S.
Key findings from the research include:
99% of manufacturing organizations are incorporating low-code into their development processes.
75% see low-code as a key driver of large-scale innovation.
80% report that low-code enhances productivity among technical teams.
76% agree that low-code streamlines software development.
84% say that combining AI with low-code accelerates innovation.

50% of COOs and 51% of CEOs in manufacturing are actively involved in low-code adoption—the highest CEO engagement among all surveyed industries.
